Winterberg-Neuastenberg

The Gerkenstein (790m) is the southwestern secondary summit of the Kahler Asten (841 m), the landmark of the Rothaargebirge. Close to it the village of Neuastenberg lies on its southern slope directly at the Hochsauerland top level roads (B 236 and B 480).

The town of Neuastenberg

Together with other villages, Neuastenberg belongs to the district of Winterberg, one of the most unique mountain villages in West Germany, on the roof of the Sauerland. You are like moving here into another world within North Rhine-Westphalia. In the year 2013, the 300-year-old existence of the mountain villages, including Neuastenberg, was celebrated. Neuastenberg is located at an altitude of 550 – 790 m above sea level and has approx. 500 inhabitants.

The Kahlen Asten

This second highest elevation in North Rhine-Westphalia lies in the Nature Park Sauerland-Rothaargebirge in the Hochsauerland. The Kahlen Asten has its name from the Heath in the summit area. There is not only the well-known weather station, but also the walk-in Asten Tower with its adjacent restaurant. Both the nearby Lenne spring and the Odeborn spring are also well worth a visit.

The Winter Sports Museum Neuastenberg

Back in 1998 the West German winter sports Museum in Winterberg-Neuastenberg was opened. With selected exhibits, the development of winter sports in the region from its beginnings to the present day is documented on a 250 sqm area.
Additional to special exhibitions, Topics on precursors and development of the skiing as well as the production of the skiing is presented.

Gastronomy and Shopping

Restaurants, cafes and shopping facilities can be reached in 100 to 300m distance from the Landhaus Postwiese.

Just a few metres away, in the Dorint Hotel on the holiday park grounds, gourmets who like to eat and drink well can indulge themselves in the restaurant Fürst Richard in a harmonious and family atmosphere. The Dorfschänke provides a hearty & regional menu in a rustic and cosy atmosphere. Mainly in summer time it is worthwhile to enjoy the beer garden.

The Hotel Gasthof zur Post in the centre of Neuastenberg with its good and traditional cuisine at reasonable prices is also recommended.

Just opposite, in the cosy Café Zimt und Apfel, homemade cakes and pastries are offered in a cosy environment.

Directly next door is the Bakery Tismes, where you can also find food for urgent need.

At the village exit towards Langewiese/Schmallenberg, ham and sausage specialties from its own production are offered in the Butcher’s shop Leber. In the attached snack-restaurant there is a traditional menu for a fair price and also to take away.

About 2km away, in Lenneplätze, is the Bergasthof zur Glocke with delicious food from regional cuisine. The menu is pleasantly clear with fair prices.
